A Sports Fan's Predicament

Alright so I’m going to be in Pittsburgh this weekend visiting a friend, and he texted me earlier this week and said he got tickets to a Pittsburgh Pirates game. I was excited to go, cause I have a semi-serious life goal (really just too lazy to make it a super-serious one) of watching a baseball game in all 30 Major League Parks. Then the thought occurred to me… I don’t know if I’ve ever really been to a sporting event that didn’t have one of my teams playing in it…

What am I supposed to do? I’ve been to tons of Buckeye, Bengals, Reds and Blue Jackets games, but those are my favorite teams. Also the Pirates aren’t just any arbitrary baseball team, they’re a division rival stuck with my Reds and the Cardinals in a three team race for the NL Central crown. So I can’t just sit idly and enjoy a baseball game if I want one of the teams to lose right?

The Pirates are hosting the LA Dodgers, you may have seen them recently in the news after this debacle. They're a good team with a lot of talent like Yasiel Puig, one of the more exciting players in baseball. Surely I could claim I’m just a big fan of his as my reasoning for cheering against the home team. Then again, I don’t really even like the dodgers or any LA team for that matter, so I’m not confident in my ability to sell that façade. I always hated the “Michigan Fans” that always managed to spring out of the woodwork the week of the OSU-Mich game that I never heard from before or after, and I feel like pretending to be a Dodgers fan would be hypocritical.

But if I show up in my Reds gear to cheer against the Pirates, isn’t that a little over the top? Would I come across as somewhat of a child with an axe to grind? Well I kind of do have an axe to grind, and I’ve been called childish far more so than I’ve been called mature beyond my years, and do I really care what fans of one of my rivals thinks of me anyways?

It’s settled then, I’m going to the game not as an attention-grabbing anti-Pirates fan, but as a loyal Reds fan doing what any other sports fan would do in my situation… Make life difficult for the team you don’t like. Hey, at least there’s a Blues Traveler concert after the game! Maybe if I can just hold off from getting beat up until they start playing us some “Run Around,” I may actually come out of this unscathed… Wish me luck!
