Super Bowl Prop Bets

It’s Super Bowl week and to give you a break from the dun of Deflategate talk, let’s take a look at some of, what I think are the best things about the Super Bowl, the prop bets. As a short disclaimer, I’m not advocating you spend any money whatsoever on gambling. These picks are all in fun, so let’s enjoy them as such. And in full disclosure, we will actually mention deflated footballs. You can’t escape it.

-Which coach will be mentioned first by name on TV after kickoff?

Pete Carroll (-110)

Bill Belichick (-130)

Pick: The Seahawks are the home team, but with the attention squarely on the Hoodie this week, it feels like a toss-up. I’ll go with Pete and hope against all hope that we can hold off mentioning “you-know-what” until 2 mintues into the broadcast.

-How many times will “deflated” balls be said during the game?

Over/under: 3

Pick: Wait the line is only three?? [quits job, flys to Las Vegas, bets first born child on the over]

National Anthem

-How long will it take Idina Menzel to sing the U.S. national anthem?

Over/under: two minutes, one second

Pick: I always take the over on Super Bowl national anthems. It’s like a free plug for whoever is singing it.

-Will Idina Menzel forget or omit at least 1 word of the official US national anthem?

Yes (+400)

No (-600)

Pick: No way. She’s a Broadway singer, she has to memorize lines to songs she didn’t write all the time. I think the bigger question is how many times Frozen or Wicked get mentioned during the pregame broadcast.

Patriots

-Will Bill Belichick smile during the game on camera?

Yes (+150)

No (-200)

Pick: I’m predicting the Patriots to win, and he has been known to break the plaster mask that is his face after big wins so I’ll go yes.

-How many times will Gisele Bundchen be shown on TV during the game?

Over/under:  1.5

Pick: This is an interesting one to pick because I think it depends on a few things, like is she going to be sitting with Patriots owner Robert Kraft? Does something happen to Tom Brady, like an injury? And I think the biggest factor, will Al Michaels pull a Brent Musburger?

-What color will Bill Belichick’s hoodie be?

Grey (-200)

Blue (+175)

Red (+700)

Pick: Now, thanks to what I can assume are a group of Patriot fans who live in their parents basements, we have a full record of the Patriot’s win-loss record based on what hoodie Belichick wears. He has worn a grey hoodie with sleeves cut 43 times before the start of this season, so that has to be the favorite. HOWEVER, he has worn blue 13 out of 18 games this year, including the playoff games. Expect Emperor Palpatine to wear blue.

Seahawks

-Will Marshawn Lynch grab his crotch after scoring a TD in the game?

Yes (+400)

No (-600)

Pick: I want to say yes, but before this game Lynch’s shenanigans only really affected his own bank account. With the NFL making it a point to say they will penalize him if he does, I think he MIGHT show some restraint.

-Will it be mentioned during the game that Pete Carroll was the last head coach of the Patriots?

Yes (+110)

No (-150)

Pick: There’s no way this doesn’t get brought up. Broadcasters love looking at the Trail of Broken Dreams that is Pete Carroll’s entire coaching career before having Russell Wilson fall into his lap to try and show what a great coach he is. It’s like catnip to them.

Halftime Show

-How many times will Katy Perry be mentioned in the first half?

Over/under: 2.5

Pick: Over. You’ve got one guaranteed right before the end of the half. You’d have to think we’d get at least two more.

-What color will Katy Perry’s hair be when she begins the halftime show?

Black/Brown (+200)

Blue/Green (+300)

Pink/Red (+300)

Blonde (+400)

Purple (+500)

Pick: I have no idea, so I’d have to go with the favorite of black/brown.

-Which song will Katy Perry perform first at halftime?

Roar (7/5)

Firework (8/5)

This Is How We Do (5/1)

Dark Horse (10/1)

Wide Awake (12/1)

E.T. (14/1)

Last Friday Night (14/1)

Waking Up In Vegas (20/1)

Pick: Dark Horse has a nice intro and would be a good song to come out to. The others don’t have the same umph.

Post-Game

-What color will the Gatorade (or liquid) be that is dumped on the head coach of the winning Super Bowl team?

Orange (3/2)

Yellow (5/2)

Clear/water (3/1)

Blue (15/2)

Red (15/2)

Green (10/1)

Pick: Another crapshoot, so I’m going with my favorite color Gatorade. Go red.

-Who will the Super Bowl MVP mention first in his interview?

Teammates (3/2)

God (5/1)

Fans/City (15/2)

Coach (12/1)

Family (12/1)

Owner (12/1)

None of the above (2/1)

Pick: Both of these teams have gone through “adversity” this year, people not believing in them and such. He’s either going to thank his teammates or the fans, I’m guessing teammates.

CROSS-SPORTS PROPS

CROSS SPORT - What will be higher on games played February 1st?

Chris Bosh Total Points                         Pick

Marshawn Lynch Rushing attempts         Pick

Pick: Bosh and the Heat play at Boston on Super Bowl Sunday, who are giving up the 25th most points in the league right now. I think we’ll see Wilson play better than in the NFC championship game, so I see Lynch’s touches down. I’ll take Bosh.

CROSS SPORT - What will be higher on games played February 1st?

Carmelo Anthony Points                        Pick

Patriots Points scored                         Pick

Pick: Anthony is averaging 24 points and is playing the Lakers at home. Pats are averaging 29 points per game. The surprising thing here is that Anthony is averaging double digits in something other than the loss column. I wouldn’t trust Carmelo Anthony to make 3 points on high school debate team. Take the Patriots.

CROSS SPORT - What will be higher on games played February 1st?

Sidney Crosby Points                         Pick

Russell Wilson TD Passes                     Pick

Pick: The Penguins are playing at home against Nashville, who are first in goals against. Not many chances for a goal or assist for Crosby. I already said I think Wilson airs it out more, so go with him.

Enjoy the game everyone!
