Arbor Day Celebration

From 9:00AM to 11:00AM

The public is welcome to celebrate Arbor Day at Riverbend Recreation Area with the Hancock Park District as they partner with the Findlay-Flag City Arbors, A Gleaner Life Insurance Society Club, The Findlay-Hancock Community Foundation, Hancock Parks Foundation, Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Findlay-Hancock County Public Library’s Literacy Coalition, Hancock SWCD, and students and staff from Liberty Benton High School’s SSA AG class this Friday, April 24 from 9-11 a.m. at Riverbend Recreation Area. The Arbor Day event will begin at 9 a.m. in shelter 5, located in the Oxbow area. Numerous Emerald Ash trees had to be removed from the Oxbow and other areas of Riverbend over last few years, offering open areas to plant various species of Maple and Oak trees. Participants will have the opportunity to assist with planting 8 trees; one tree will be planted in honor of the Community Foundation. The Hancock Soil & Water Division was generous to donate 150 small various pine sapling trees for those that wish to take a tree home at the end of the event, to plant at their school, home, or business. There will be a discussion about why trees are important for the environment and the significance of tree conservation. Join us for a demonstration on how to properly plant and care for young trees, learn the importance of pruning and how to keep trees growing structurally strong and healthy. You can also learn about prepping and planting container plants. Arbor Day will end with a walking tour from shelter 4 to the Arboretum where you can observe and hear about some of the unique species of trees that live at Riverbend. Light snacks, along with warm and cold beverages will be provided during the event in shelter 4.
